Leadless, Minimally InvasiveThe heart rate and activity logger DST milli-HRT ACT simultaneously measures long term heart rate, activity and body temperature in the animal. The logger has no external wires, which makes it especially simple to implant. The logger is hermetically sealed for biocompatibility. ApplicationThe logger is ideal for a variety of studies including those looking at behaviour and stress response, in the fields of laboratory animal research, wildlife research, animal welfare, and fish physiology.Correlation Between Heart Rate and ActivityLooking at heart rate and activity together gives researchers an opportunity to identify correlation between heart rate and activity in the animal, for example in stress response studies. The logger comes with the option of either two or three parameters: activity and temperature or activity, heart rate and temperature.Leadless ECG Derived Heart RateThe heart rate is derived from a leadless single channel ECG. As the electrodes are part of the housing the logger is especially easy to implant. The logger takes a burst measurement of ECG at the set time interval and calculates the mean heart rate for each recording. For validation purposes, each individual burst is graded with a QI (quality index) accessible in the application software.Overview of Changes in Animal Activity Over TimeMeasuring acceleration derived activity gives researchers the chance to get an overall view of changes in the study animals’ activity over time. The DST activity loggers measure acceleration in three dimensions, in relation to earth‘s gravity field. Each activity measurement is composed of a burst activity measurement over one minute with a chosen sampling frequency of 0.03Hz-10Hz.Stress-Free Long-Term StudiesThe logger has a battery life of over 6 months, when sampling activity, heart rate, and temperature every 20 minutes. The logger is especially useful when a comprehensive data set throughout the research is needed with no disturbance to the animal.Single or multiple intervalsThere are two modes for sampling, either at a single interval throughout the period or multiple intervals. Multiple intervals are especially useful when frequent measurements are needed at certain time periods.Guaranteed accuracy and performanceEvery logger is individually calibrated and comes with a calibration certificate. The loggers’ accuracy and performance are guaranteed for one year after production.Key featuresLeadless, minimally invasiveSmall, size 13mm x 39.5mm and 12gCorrelation between heart rate and activityStress-free long-term studiesGuaranteed accuracy and performanceSimple in Use, From Setup to Data RetrievalThe logger and the accompanying items are designed for ease of use throughout the research process, from setting up the logger, implanting it, to retrieving and analysing the data. The logger is supported by the Mercury software and a Communication Box which have to be purchased with the first order.Programming the loggerTo start the logger for measurements it is placed into a Communication Box and connected to the software. The Communication Box serves as an interface between the logger and a PC computer. In the application software, the user sets the start time, start date and sampling interval before starting the recorder.Multiple measurement intervalsDifferent measurement intervals can be set for the same study. This is especially useful when more or less frequent measurements are needed at a certain time period, saving data space and battery.Memory and battery life calculationsThe software automatically calculates when memory fills based on certain interval settings, making it easier for the user to decide how to program the logger. Estimated battery consumption during that time period is also calculated.Uploading the DataAfter recovering the logger, the logger is inserted into the communication box and the recorded data is uploaded to the software. The results are displayed both in graphic and tabular form and the data can be exported to other programs.ReusableAfter retrieving the data the logger can easily be sterilized and reused as long as the battery lasts. Current battery life can be viewed in the software and the user can get an estimate of how long the logger memory and battery will last in a planned research. All Star-Oddi loggers are hermetically sealed and leak proof. Therefore the battery is not replaceable.SpecificationsSensorsHeart-rate, Activity (3-axes acceleration) and temperatureSize (Diameter x Length)13mm x 39.5mmHousing MaterialAlumina (Ceramic)Weight12gData Resolution12 bit (Temperature), 13 bit (Acceleration)Acceleration Resolution2mgTemperature Range5°C to +45°C (41°F to 113°F)*Temperature Resolution 0.032°C (0.058°F)Temperature Accuracy+/-0.2°C (0.36°F)Memory TypeFLASHMemory Capacity99,863 measurements per sensor (if all parameters are recorded simultaneously)Memory Capacity Bytes2,097,152 bytes / HR+T 3 bytes, acceleration statistics 18 bytesMeasurement IntervalUser specified in minutes or hoursMinimum Measurement Interval2 minutes (T+HR+ACT,T+HR,T+ACT)Measurement Options (Primary/Secondary)T+HR OR T+ACT OR T+HR+ACTHeart Rate (HR): ECG Sampling Frequency80-800HzData Retention25 yearsClockReal time clock.
